Race: The Pegasus Airlines PWA Windsurf World Cup is held in the slalom discipline. Slalom is a high speed race in a course made up of many left and right hand sharp turns. Therefore, a slalom course resembles a Z shaped pattern. The course is marked with buoys that have to be jibed around. Slalom is the fastest among the various windsurfing styles. During a race, the speed of a windsurfer may reach 40 mph.
Slalom boards are small and narrow, and require strong winds. Fun board class racing rules necessitate a wind of 9-35 knots for a slalom event to take place. The Alaçatı windsurfing area is a 500m long and 400m wide section with completely flat water and an average wind of 25 knots. The constant wind and flat water makes Alaçatı an extremely attractive destination for all levels of windsurfers; from beginners to PWA racers.
PWA Slalom Race Discipline
The races are formed of qualifications, semi finals and finals. As many races as possible are run depending on the wind conditions. While the first windsurfer of each series gains 0.7 points the rest of the racers’ given points differ according to their ranking. The windsurfer with the least points becomes the champion.
