EVENT STATUS >> Two More Races Added To The Score Sheet On The Second Day In Alacati.

Another day of perfect slalom conditions saw Valerie Ghibaudo add another victory to her tally, hot on her heels, Karin Jaggi snapped her first race win of the event.

It was all change in the men's fleet, with Bjorn Dunkerbeck and local hero Bora Kozanoglu claiming the two men's races, and Kevin Pritchard sneaked into first place overall for the event thanks to a string of consistent results.

The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Two

Shaking things up on day two, the tables are turned following an afternoon of shocks and surprises.

The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Two

Shaking things up on day two, the tables are turned following an afternoon of shocks and surprises.

Starting the day with the second race in the men’s fleet, the 74 man first round was quickly pruned down to two ten man semi finals without major upset.

Showing his thirst for victory, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) made light work of the 4 buoy down wind course to sail to victory in his semi final, with rival Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) mimicking his performance in the second semi final. The pair both advanced to the final where they’d go head to head.

Final time, and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, MFC, Dakine) made his presence known as he pressured Dunkerbeck for the number one spot. Behind them and off the pace of the leaders, Albeau jostled with Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) for third position.

The final reach said it all, as Dunkerbeck opened up an impressive lead to cruise to victory completely untouched by his nearest challenger, Pritchard, who took second place. The Albeau vs. Williams battle ended with William’s succumbing to the World Champion’s brute strength in fourth, leaving Albeau free to take third position.

In the losers final, Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde) put his foot down to sail to victory ahead of Arnon Dagan (Fanatic, Gaastra) in second and Cedric Bordes (Tabou, Gaastra) in third.

Moving directly into race three, proceedings seemed to sway in favor of the unexpected.  The first shock came when Peter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde) blew his chances in the first round with a false start.

Moving into the quarterfinals, and Chris Pressler (Starboard, Severne) fell to the same fate when he crossed the start line early. This however, was only a small taste of things to come.

Rolling onto the first semi final, the crowd were dumbstruck when they heard that seven of the ten man heat had false started. Amongst the perpetrators were Albeau, Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde), Peter Volwater (F2, North) and Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer). The mass disqualification left Pritchard, Matt Wemms (Fanatic, North) and Jesper Orth (Starboard, Severne) free to advance without even having to sail the heat.

The second semi final was marginally more predictable despite Dan Ellis’ (Fanatic, MauiSails) disqualification thanks to the seemingly contagious spat of false starts.

In the rerun minus Ellis, Dunkerbeck stole the heat from Bora Kozanoglu (Starboard), but his victory was by no means handed to him on a plate, as the defiant Turk battled right to the finish line to claim a well earned second place.

In the race final, local Kozanoglu seemed hell-bent on avenging his previous clash with Dunkerbeck. Sniffing his first ever race win, and backed by the ecstatic local crowd, the Turkish racer summoned an almighty performance to fend off Dunkerbeck and defy all the doubters. Rapturous applause congratulated the local hero as he claimed the race as his, leaving Dunkerbeck to settle for second, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, NeilPryde) in third and Pritchard fourth.

The twelve strong losers final was won by Albeau, who’d done the best he could to make amends for his semi final shocker.

Moving over to the women’s fleet for race two, and Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) and Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) made their intentions clear, winning their respective semi finals.

Advancing into the final, Karin Jaggi seemed the most determined to take the race win. After a spirited performance she sat untouched at the front of the fleet, leaving Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) and Lee Korzitz (Tabou, Gaastra) to fight it out for second. On the finish line, Jaggi won by a clear margin, and Hlavaty sneaked ahead of Korzitz to take second.

In the women’s losers final, Lena Erdil (Loft) bounced back after narrowly missing out on a spot in the final. A stellar performance awarded her with the win ahead of Annika Gillgren (Severne).

Race three saw Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, Loft) return to dominance after victory in her semi final. In the ensuing final she laid waste to Jaggi’s advances to add another victory to her name. Jaggi had to make do with second place and Armenia’s Sarah Hébert (Starboard, Naish) mopped up the remaining podium place in third.

A depleted losers final thanks to three false starts saw Gillgren take the victory and therefore place eleventh in that race.

The day also made inroads to the fourth men’s and women’s race, which will be completed tomorrow, on competition’s third day. Proceedings will kick off at 11.00am with the skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. EVENT STATUS >> Albeau And Ghibaudo Lead On Day One
A fresh 20-25 knot wind accompanied by super smooth water provided perfect slalom conditions on the opening day of competition in Alacati. With one race completed, Antoine Albeau and Valerie Ghibaudo were the first to rise to the challenge, taking the early event lead in their respective fleets.

The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - Day One

One of the biggest slalom fleets in almost a decade hits the water for the start of the six day long Alaçati epic.

The biggest players in the PWA’s prestigious Slalom discipline have touched down in Alaçati, Turkey, joining forces with an impressive local racing contingent. The combined total of the men’s and women’s fleets comes in just short of 100 competitors, making this the biggest racing fleet in eight years.

The first morning of the event was set aside for rigging and registration, giving the local thermal wind plenty of time to build before racing commenced in the afternoon.

When registration was completed, 75 men and 18 women signed up for the event, and the trademark Alaçati wind had built to a solid 20-25 knots, accompanied by super smooth water. In nothing short of perfect slalom conditions, the event was ready to be christened with the first men’s and women’s races.

Starting with the men’s fleet, the first round of heats passed without upset, the only exception being Dan Ellis (Fanatic, MauiSails), who let nerves get the better of him when he false started. The implications mean Ellis clocks up a 75th position finish and will no doubt have to use one of his discards on the result should four races be completed (four races grants the first discard).

Flying the Turkish flag, Enes Yılmazer (JP, NeilPryde) carried the hopes of the local fans on his shoulders. A promising start saw him fly into fourth in his first heat, but a lapse of concentration in the subsequent round meant he missed out on a place in the semi finals by one position.

Moving through to the semi finals and Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) showed a welcome return to form. The iconic speed sailor looked dominant in a heat laden with slaloms heaviest hitters, and ultimately stormed to victory ahead of second and third place rivals Jimmy Diaz (North) and Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North).

In the lower half of the draw, there wasn’t a great deal of surprise when Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) emerged victorious in his semi final. Sailing fast in second place, Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer) looked hungry to continue his run of form after finishing 4th place overall in the last event in Fuerteventura.

Moving into the final and predictability struck again when Albeau barged his way to the front of the fleet. Starting as he no doubt intends to go on, he claimed the first race and early event lead as his. Always consistent, Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, MFC, Dakine) settled into his familiar second position, and Maynard looked like he was warming up for bigger and better things in third.

Toping the ranks in the losers final was Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (F2, NeilPryde, MFC), who had his work cut out to defeat Peter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde), who’s more determined than ever after missing out on the start of the season due to issues with the US immigration process!

In the women’s fleet the seething Turkish crowd showed their support for compatriots and PWA regulars Çagla Kubat (Starboard, North) and Lena Erdil (The Loft). In response, the pair made their way into the final and proceeded to take 8th and 7th respectively.

Familiarly it was Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) and Karin Jaggi (F2, North) that had the firmest grip on the finale, fuelled by an age-old rivalry that’s pushed them to another level of racing. In this instance it was Ghibaudo that took top honors, leaving Jaggi simmering in second and Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) in third. Polish racer Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) put her mark on the losers final when she crossed the finish line in first.

Picking up the action again tomorrow, proceedings will kick off at 11.00am with the skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from day two of competition. On the site you’ll be able to:

The 2007 Pegasus Airlines PWA World Cup, Alaçati – Event Summary
20.08.07 - By: Brian McDowell

Alaçati delivers 5 out of 5 days severe slalom racing to match the PWA’s 100% wind record during this epic 2007 season.

Cesme province’s stylish coastal resort welcomed the PWA back after a joint sanctioned event with IFCA back in 2006. Now boasting full World Cup Status and impressive sponsors to boot, the stage was set for a fiesta of competition and music served parallel to the host nations Surf ‘n Sound festival.

Antoine Albeau (Starboard / NeilPryde) touched down in Turkey with the 2007 title already secured. The French all-round master of windsurfing had the luxury of a stress-free end-of-season wind-down in Alaçati, yet still managed to coast to victory ahead of two legends in the sport - Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1 / North) and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails).

In conditions ranging anything from 10-25 knots, the race director kept everyone on their toes all week by setting a selection of both short and long courses, with the layouts featuring 4-6 buoys and a variety of length in the reaches. The formats switched from 8x8-man qualifying heats to quarter-fleet starts to fully test the skill sets required to race in both clean and turbulent air at the starts and marks.

Over the course of 10 fierce men’s eliminations, Albeau’s error count overall stayed low, despite a slow start on day one when his NeilPryde team mate Pieter Bijl (Fanatic / NeilPryde) stepped-in and took the early lead. Albeau also wobbled with a small blemish in the form of a premature start on day 4 when nearly everyone’s results went haywire.

In terms of consistency only Bjorn Dunkerbeck stayed watertight until the last as he shed only one of his low discards after qualifying for all but the critical race 10 final. It will nag at Dunkerbeck that he couldn’t dig-out a race win, but there’ll be no questions about how hard he’ll be working on his top-end speed in lighter winds before the tour hits Germany.

Kevin Pritchard also showed remarkable character to stay in the frame. He suffered gear failure during a collision on day one that negated his race 2 victory, but the gutsy American gritted his teeth to pull himself back into the game over the next 4 days, starting with a crucial win in tricky conditions on day 3 to stay ahead of Dunkerbeck.

Apart from Bijl, the only other players in the frame to truly pressurize Pritchard and Dunkerbeck for a top-3 finish were last season’s victor in Turkey Finian Maynard (F2 /NeilPryde), and Peter Volwater (F2 / North). 2006 overall runner-up finisher Micah Buzianis’ (JP / NeilPryde) woeful season continued as he struggled in the lighter winds and never really threatened to push for glory.

It seems at this stage that there are only really three figures this season that can consistently feature at the top of the PWA Slalom fleet. Pritchard, Dunkerbeck and Albeau always seem to emerge above the rest over a wide range of conditions. The remainder seem simply to be relegated to having their day in the conditions that suit them and their particular equipment.

This was evident even considering the typical final-day tension in which Alaçati was no exception. Dunkerbeck exploded in the quarterfinals on a day when he’d planed to oust Pritchard from the runner’s-up spot, but was eventually gifted second overall when Pritchard himself missed the final. Dunkerbeck’s lower discard scores were therefore enough to allow him to leapfrog Pritchard for the runner’s-up step on the stage. Albeau of course made no mistake in banking a fifth and final race win in their absence.

A true champion never surrenders and Albeau could’ve taken the easy route by sitting back and relaxing. But winning is also about hard work and, as Albeau is no stranger to the labours involved in R&D and training, he was never going to cease in his constant quest for more speed. It’s also been a while since Dunkerbeck’s been so satisfied at a prize giving. To see his efforts paying-off clearly meant a lot to him and Pritchard and Albeau must fear for how he’ll attack hard at the final tour stop in Sylt.

Women

The Women’s event was always going to be billed as a mouth-watering match between Karin Jaggi (F2 / North) and the resurgent Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou).

Jaggi’s last-gasp victory in Fuerteventura denied Ghibaudo the tour lead, but Ghibaudo’s lust for victory intensified after her performance in Sotavento to a totally new level.

Ghibaudo and Jaggi were fairly equally matched for speed, but the clear difference was in the Frenchwomen’s starting skill.  If anyone thought Jaggi was letting someone else share the limelight they could not be further from the truth. This was evident as tension rose and Jaggi was forced to push the start, which resulted in two painful disqualifications.

Ghibaudo’s superior timing earned her 9 victories from the 15 races completed against Jaggi’s uncharacteristically meagre 3 bullets.

The real excitement in women’s slalom are the contenders of the future with many young and exciting names rising to the fore, plus a wealth of local talent in the fleet. It was also pleasure to see Verena Fauster (F2 / Gaastra) recover well from surgery early in the season to finish consistently high enough to claim third overall.

Turkish TV celebrity Cagla Kubat (Starboard / North) may well show at more PWA events after her impressive 4th place finish which was grafted through speed and cunning turning skill to entertain the excited local crowds.

Ghibaudo’s victory here must have cut deep into Jaggi, but by the same token Jaggi will be amped-up and excited by the prospect of the 2008 season already. The Swiss multiple world champion’s second place here was enough to secure her the 2007 women’s slalom title. She’ll lift that trophy at Sylt to mark an important leap forward for the women’s sport.

The tour switches it’s focus back to the waves next with a trip to yet another new location for the 2007 Mormaii Ibiraquera Wave Contest, PWA World Cup near Florianópolis in Southern Brazil. Until we thanks our Turkish hosts for a spectacular event and look forward to returning for many seasons to come.
